Health care is one of the largest employment sectors in the state. The need for well-trained health care workers is expected to remain strong for years. According to a new study by the Workforce Development Council of Seattle-King County, the following occupations are in demand: registered nurses, personal and home care aides, home health aides, medical scientists, and medical secretaries. SkillUp and its partners are creating career opportunities in the sector to provide employers with a strong talent pool and help workers prepare for sustainable careers.
Home Health Aides
-
SEIU 775 Healthcare Northwest Training Partnership program will create and implement 1-year training apprenticeship program to help home health aides obtain state certification and raise the quality and composition for homecare workers.
- SEIU1199 Multi-Employer Training Fund will help incumbent hospital workers move into high-demand, higher-paying healthcare careers.
- SkillUp will lead a committee that will explore healthcare apprenticeship training in high-demand healthcare occupations, with the long-term goal of developing a statewide plan for healthcare apprenticeship. Planning committee members include the Washington State Apprenticeship & Training Council, SEIU 775 Healthcare Northwest Training Partnership, the Seattle-King County Workforce Development Council, Washington State Department of Labor and Industries, the federal representative for apprenticeship for our region and other healthcare industry representatives.
Medical Assistants
- SkillUp, as part of the College for Working Adults initiative, funds a 69-credit Medical Assistant Certificate program at North Seattle Community College that articulates to a 94-credit AAS degree. This new approach compresses instruction into 5 quarters with a one-quarter externship. Each quarter consists of a 12-credit program led by one instructor and focuses on a series of individual program competencies. North's first cohort just graduated June 17, 2011. A latest cohort graduated in Winter 2012.
