SkillUp's Transportation and Logistics iniative provides increased career advancement opportunities for airport and seaport incumbent workers and job seekers. Port Jobs, which develops strategies to employ more skilled workers in port-related businesses and create opportunities for those who have typically been underrepresented in such jobs, is SkillUp's lead partner. Employer partners include Alaska Airlines, HMS Host and others. In the months ahead, we will help the partnership deepen its engagement with employers and help airport and incumbent workers in the cluster climb the career ladder with training and education.
Port of Seattle Quick Facts
The Port of Seattle plays a key role in bringing international trade and transportation to the region, promotes economic development and supports industries as diverse as tourism and commercial fishing. The Port also manages a number of real estate assets, and is a key builder of transportation infrastructure.
Economic Impact:
Port of Seattle transportation facilities supported nearly 200,000 jobs in the Puget Sound region in 2003 and generated more than $12 billion in business revenue and $626 million in state and local taxes, according to the most recent study available.
Sea-Tac Airport:
The Port owns and operates Seattle-Tacoma International Airport - the 17th busiest in the nation – handling more than 30 million passengers annually. At Sea-Tac, 27 passenger airlines offer domestic and international services.
Seattle's Seaport:
State-of-the-art cargo-handling facilities – those orange cranes and cargo facilities along Seattle's waterfront constitute the nation's 6th busiest seaport, ranking among the top 50 ports globally. China is the port's largest trading partner, followed by Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand.
Cruise Seattle:
Two cruise ship terminals handled 755,000 passengers during the 2007 season. Five major cruise lines currently operate weekly service out of Seattle on nine premier vessels. Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean depart from the Bell Street Pier Cruise Terminal at Pier 66. Holland America Line, Princess Cruises depart from Terminal 30.
Marinas:
The Port of Seattle also operates four public marinas:
*Bell Harbor Marina at Pier 66
*Fishermen's Terminal at Salmon Bay
*Harbor Island Marina at the Duwamish Waterway
*Shilshole Bay Marina at Seaview Avenue
Parks and Waterfront Access:
Along Elliott Bay, the Port maintains 19 public access and park areas that provide various amenities such as waterfront and city views, canoe and kayak launch areas, walking and biking paths, or fishing and recreation areas.
